Port of Miami - Part 2 - December 13

Beautiful sunny day today.  Found a few geocaches including one earth cache and one virtual cache.  Took the bus ($2.50) to South Beach.  Walked around South Pointe Park.  Lovely area.  Lots of surfers, although the surf did not seem too cooperative. We had 10,000 steps by noon.

We had lunch at Joe's Stone Crab.  The waiters were quite attentive and brought a breadbasket the moment we sat down.  It took us quite a while to decide what to order.  We finally ordered Manhattan clam chowder, stone crab bisque, 1 1/2 order of large stone crab claws, and grilled tomatoes.  The chowder was loaded with chunks of goodies, but Bob found it a bit spicy.  The bisque was creamy and smooth.  A small cup of each, rather than a bowl, would have been fine.  The claws were served icy cold.  They were moist and served with mustard sauce as well as drawn butter.  Stone crab claws grow back.  Only one claw is removed.  Once harvested, the crabs are thrown back into the ocean to regenerate the claw which takes several moulting seasons.  One thing is for sure, if you are looking for a romantic dinner, this is not the place!  There were many noisy parties, birthday and otherwise.

We took a taxi back to the hotel. Had a rest, walked to the park across the street and walked along the river walk.  Saw the Seafair.  It is a $40M yacht which can be rented for events.  Dream on!  We returned to the market, had a beer at the Beer Station, found the food court upstairs, then had a gelato.  Called it a day at 7pm.  Finished the day with 18,000 steps.
